Over the past 20 years, many things have changed and evolved, especially in fashion and aesthetic tastes. Painting and decorating experts with long-standing experience will tell you that interior design preferences in 2024 are vastly different from those in 2004. In our last blog post, we discussed new colour trends for 2024 and the growing inclination towards more adventurous painting and decorating styles.

Various factors influence how we style our properties. Home decor trends are shaped by the world around us, including art, fashion, and culture. Nowadays, we have more freedom than ever to explore a wide array of looks and styles.

This marks a significant departure from past decades when staying on-trend was essential. While trends still exist, the pressure to conform has lessened considerably.

Let’s take a look at some of the decorating trends from the past 20 years—many of which you might remember!

Turn of The Century Trends

The 2000s saw intriguing movements in interior design influenced by technology. Unlike the previous decades, which focused on big TVs and Hi-Fis, the 2000s featured slimmer TVs and integrated speakers.

This decade also embraced the reworking of old items and furniture into new standards. ‘Vintage’ became a popular trend, with many homes adopting distressed or retro pieces. DIY projects gained momentum, thanks to TV programming that inspired people to recreate what they saw on screen.

Fortunately, the 2000s also marked the decline of puffed-up wallpaper and Artex style ceilings. These trends, prominent in the 90s, started to fade away. Additionally, continental styles were popular; a Tuscan-themed bathroom was the height of fashion!

The 10s: A Return to Happy Shabbiness?

By the 2010s, homeowners began moving away from polished looks towards ‘shabby chic’. This trend involved incorporating barn doors and worn wooden fittings to achieve an 'authentic' look. The decade emphasized natural aesthetics over synthetic ones.

Kitchen spaces saw significant changes, too. Whitewashed cabinets from the early 2000s gave way to open shelving, enhancing accessibility. The entertainment-focused living room shifted towards integrated smart technology, making way for more focus on furnishings and colours.

In the 2010s, the emphasis was on the core aesthetics of the home rather than the accessories. Bold colours like purple and pink gave way to milder tones, although luxurious purples remained popular.
