Using Dark Paint in Your Home
Dark interiors look and feel sophisticated and cozy at the same time. However, many of us are hesitant to use them, fearing they might appear depressing and unwelcoming. If you're one of the brave ones ready to embrace darker colors, read our five top tips to help you make the most of your space and create a snug, warm environment.
Keep the Ceiling Light
When painting and decorating, leave the top of the area above wall friezes—as well as the architraves—white, or the same color as the ceiling. This will make the room look taller and less boxy. The depth created also makes the room look bigger. Keeping the ceiling light guides the eye upwards, making the ceilings look higher. You can also use lamps or chandeliers to reflect light and give the appearance of a more open space.
Jazz Up the Interior with Paint Colors
Dark walls provide a great opportunity to play with contrast. One of our favorite dark colors is Studio Green by Farrow & Ball, a deep dark green that wakes up the space and brings interiors to life. Decorate using light-colored decorations and avoid covering the windows to maximize natural light. Mirrors can make the room appear even more spacious. When using whites, choose a subtle shade that balances rather than aggressively contrasts with the dark.
Let It Glow
Style with metallics. Add brass, nickel, or copper candlesticks, vases, or even glittery statement cushions. Use metallic finishes to make the most of natural light, reflecting it to create a deeper sense of dimension and make the room lighter and cozier. Dark-colored walls emphasize the decorations and accessories used.
Paint It Like You Mean It
Be brave and paint all the walls dark. A statement wall might look insecure and could even make a small room appear smaller. By embracing the room's size and the chosen color, you can transform your space into an intimate and cozy haven. If you know you want dark walls but can't decide on a color, get inspiration from Paint & Paper Library's extensive collection.
Maximize the Light
Use reflective surfaces. Different rooms offer various opportunities for this: in the kitchen, use chromatic shiny elements and surfaces to make the most of the light available. In other rooms, hang mirrors and use glossy paint finishes to reflect light and make the room appear more spacious. Don't forget the ceiling; it can be a unique touch to illuminate the room.
